Academics have taught medicine in Iasi since 1879. The University bears the name of Grigore Teodor Popa, a prominent professor and intellectual, forerunner of neuroendocrinology. As a public medical university, it holds notable repute as a primary higher education establishment in the nation, attributing its standing to a legacy of 143 years in cultivating medical professionals. Furthermore, its present distinction among top-tier institutions engaged in advanced research and education further exemplifies its prominence.
The university caters to a student body of over 13.000 undergraduate and postgraduate students across four faculties: General Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, and Medical Bioengineering, as well as a Doctoral School. Its commitment to preparing exceptional healthcare professionals for the multicultural world of the 21st century is evident in the diverse student community, with more than 2,900 international students from 84 different countries.
With a faculty of over 900 dedicated teaching staff, the university benefits from continuously expanding infrastructure, which includes more than 44.000 square meters of educational and research spaces.

This exposure to the clinical setting begins from the first year of study and becomes an integral part of medical and dental training from the third year onwards.
